- Eric Yaverbaum shares his experience as a successful franchisee and securing Domino’s Pizza as his first national account.
- In 1985, Yaverbaum observed the media landscape and predicted a Major League Baseball strike would gain significant press coverage.
- Recognizing how the media would cover the strike, he saw an opportunity to represent the fans’ perspective, which was often overlooked.
- Yaverbaum formed the National Citizens Action Group called Strikeback, urging fans to boycott baseball games for every day the strike continued.
- The campaign gained traction when USA Today featured it, leading to an overwhelming response with bags of mail from supporters.
- Yaverbaum’s persistent efforts to engage with Major League Baseball’s commissioner, Peter Ueberroth, eventually led to Strikeback being acknowledged as one of the reasons the strike ended quickly.
- The campaign’s success significantly raised Yaverbaum’s profile, demonstrating the impact of strategic public relations in the media.
- Yaverbaum emphasizes that his objective wasn’t just press coverage but securing clients, which he successfully achieved through this campaign.
[12.04] Public Relations for Dummies and Smart People Too
- Eric Yaverbaum discusses his role as the author of “Public Relations for Dummies,” a book that has become an industry standard.
- He reflects on his initial reluctance to write the book despite being frequently in the news and recognized for his PR expertise.
- Yaverbaum’s business partner convinced him that writing the book would be a valuable asset for his PR agency.
- The book serves as a practical guide, showing that effective PR doesn’t require large budgets but rather smart strategies.
- Yaverbaum shares an anecdote about the first person he sent the book to, who was initially offended, thinking the “Dummies” title was directed at them.
- He clarifies that the book is intended to make PR accessible to everyone, regardless of their experience or resources.
- Yaverbaum is currently working on the third edition of “Public Relations for Dummies,” which will be released next year with updated content.
- He reiterates that his career has been built on the principles outlined in the book, making PR achievable for anyone willing to learn and apply the techniques.
[28.41] Navigating the Challenges of Modern Information Dissemination
- Public relations courses still require outdated editions of textbooks, despite rapid changes in media.
- Social and digital media have drastically altered the landscape of information sharing.
- The traditional news sources, like Walter Cronkite on CBS Evening News, have been replaced by diverse and fast-moving digital platforms.
- It’s increasingly difficult to differentiate between fact and fiction in today’s media environment.
- Personalized algorithms on social media create echo chambers, limiting exposure to diverse perspectives.
- This algorithm-driven content can reinforce existing biases, leading to increased polarization.
- The key to overcoming this is actively seeking out multiple sources of information to get a well-rounded view.
- It’s crucial to use social media intentionally, rather than being passively influenced by it.
- In an era of rapid information flow, making informed decisions requires effort and critical evaluation of all available resources.
[38.01] Harnessing the Power of Podcasts for Your Business
- Startups in garages have turned into major successes like Google and Vitamin Water with the help of PR and media exposure.
- Podcasts are a powerful tool for reaching your target market; tens of thousands speak directly to specific audiences.
- You can begin by identifying 20 podcasts where you can be a resource, and pursue opportunities to appear on them.
- It is crucial to show up where news is happening; think ahead about upcoming stories and how you can contribute your expertise.
- Engaging in smaller, niche-focused media like podcasts or industry trades can lead to significant opportunities.
- Visibility in the right places builds credibility and opens doors to larger platforms over time.
- Persistence in sharing your expertise and being available for interviews can be a thought leader in your field.
- Using podcasts strategically allows you to reach and engage with a highly targeted audience effectively.
- Leveraging these platforms is an affordable and impactful way to grow your business and establish authority.
[45.51] The Importance of Networking and Mentorship
- Networking is essential for career growth; attending industry events can provide invaluable connections.
- Mentorship offers real-world advice that goes beyond textbooks or case studies.
- Learning from those with more experience can offer insights that are priceless in advancing your career.
- Being proactive in seeking out mentors can significantly impact your professional development.
- Organizations like YPO can provide access to multiple mentors and valuable networking opportunities.
- Networking isn’t just about meeting people; it’s about forming relationships with those who can guide you.
- Your network can serve as a ladder, helping you climb to new levels of success.
- The knowledge gained from seasoned professionals can be a unique education you won’t find elsewhere.
- Hard work and networking often lead to “lucky” opportunities that propel your career forward.
