So good to have you on with us. Michael: All right, thank you, Tony. Tony: Michael, lots to talk about and I’m very interested in what it takes to be a Mogul Media or a Media Mogul here. But first things first, Michael, I’d love to know how did it all start for you? What’s your backstory? Michael: That is a good question. It started for me when my wife came to me and said, I want to work with you in the investment industry. So I said, okay, let me get you through the licenses. And we got her through the licenses and I were in this nice penthouse office that had the panoramic view of Dallas, and I said, okay honey, here’s what you have to do. You have to call these people on these little cards, Dun and Bradstreet cards and find out if they have an interest in trading commodities, and if they do, just send them to me. I’ll take it from there. So she got a call and she’d looked over. She says, they hung up on me. I said we’ll try it again. She got a second call. They hung up on her again. The third she tried it and they hung up on her again. She picks up the phone and throws it on the floor. She says we’re all over. You’re not going to do it this way. I said, well honey, you don’t lose faith. That’s just, your first three, it’s not going to work. She says, no, we’re not doing it that way. I said, what are we doing then says you’re going on the radio. And I went, I am okay. I know a guy calling. And so I happened to call this guy who had a radio show about investments, invited me down. I started talking about futures. They were talking about trading stocks and, and next thing I know they were getting more calls for me and the futures than there were for trading. So the network and it was Biz Radio at the time said we’d like what you’re doing. We’re getting calls about what you’re doing, so we’re going to give you a show where you show up. So, we ended up doing the show and after that and morphed into a television show, on the Internet we were about, I guess it at least five to seven years, ahead of Disney or anybody else, CBS, NBC, ABC, Bloomberg, CNBC. Wasn’t even, there yet. It was another network in LA I think an old buddy of mine, Ira Ramstein was a regular on it. Anyway, long story short, we’re doing internet protocol television business with fully interactive communication. It was about 14 years ago and never looked back. Ended up with a radio show on iHeart for about eight years and that was The Traders Network. And then poor wife, she died and I took a vacation that was on Aspen for about a month. Then next thing I got a call and they said, hey, you got to come back. People are still making money off of your show. You’ve been gone for 18 months. So I decided if I came back, I’d started network WFN one World Finance News and create multiple shows, but we’re going to do television instead of just radio. So we started with radio at iHeart again, in 11 months, built a TV studio and move into this. And then we’re going to start spinning out some other shows. But long story short, that’s how it happened. Tony: Quite a story, Michael, and I am sorry about your wife. Michael: Thank you. Tony: She started you on an amazing career and by the way, for the audience I’ve been interviewed by Michael on his show, CEO money was very cool. As a matter of fact, they can find about a thousand videos that we’ve kicked out so far. about 780 CEOs and some brilliant, brilliant disruptors on that show. Tony: Very good on that. Very cool. Let’s talk more about WFN one, what it is, how expensive it is, what people can find there, let’s take us through this place. Michael: WFN1 is world financial news and I put one on there because we needed to differentiate from everybody else because it’s first. That’s what the one (1) stands for. And it is a business broadcast network that focuses on entrepreneurs in a variety of topics, whether it’s Btech or it’s Biotech or it’s the Internet of things. Whenever somebody has something that is brand new and it’s going to disrupt their industry sector. I’m interested in talking to them. I’ll give you an example. You know about the bar code, right? Tony: I’m not sure I know about blockchain. Michael: No Barcode. Tony: We’ve had barcodes for quite some time, yes. Michael: So the guy that invented the barcode then later invented the QR code. That’s a square thing that you use when you get on the airplane or what have you has been on our show and he’s got a brand new product and you can just take your phone, focus it on the dress and as walking through the store and let’s say that your wife and you’ll be able to, she’ll be able to see what she looks like in the dress or they’ve got a QR code that goes into a hallmark card and children can send grandma a picture of a personalized video picture that comes up in addition to the Hallmark card. So I happened to bump into another guy. Tony: That’s very cool by the way. I like that one. What’s the name of that product? Michael: The Qmage, Q M A G E. Tony: Okay. Michael: And I happen to have another guy who was on the show, Nick. Nick invented these, you know what augmented reality is? Tony: I can guess, but I don’t know what that exact product is. Michael: Well, it’s like when you look at something and it, and you can either turn it into a cartoon or you can see, augmented reality is also another thing that is in front like heads up display on jets for the jet pilots. Long story short, I said, you know, I was interviewing Nick, about his augmented reality glasses. I said if you put a QR code on those glasses. You can walk down a warehouse and just look at what everything is and all your inventory will be done for you. Instead of having that handheld Barcode machine that they use and to make it so much faster. And you can even shop with these glasses because he’s already into the clothing department or the department stores for clothes. And they said you know what, we would love to meet that guy. And so I put the QR code with the augmented reality glasses and they’re often running. Tony: That’s amazing, wow. Definitely, so there’s, so you have inventors, disruptors, game changers, anyone that can help or change society in any way. Michael: And then we try to introduce them to people who will invest in them on an institutional level. So say Nick is looking for a $25 million to buy marketing staff up and do things of that nature. I introduced him to the investors. Matter of fact, some of the people that, that are associated with our company in that capacity, this one person, Howard just called me, he’s the guy that was responsible for taking the Bisco public and then when Michael Milken was funding CNN, he had to go through this guy Howard to get the deal done. So I, those, that caliber of investment people that are watching our show to be able to find the latest thing to invest in the next Unicorn is something that we have a complete portfolio of, whether it’s the family office, bridge lenders, or Classic Investment Bankers. So we try to create an environment that we have a successful network and we introduced people that could help them with an exit strategy, with the marketing, and with the funding. That’s just trying to not take you down in too much into the weeds, but that gives you a better feel. But what the mission of the show is all about. It’s not just to interview somebody who’s got the next big whistle, it’s being able to help them create a success out of the product that they’re putting their blood, sweat, and treasure into. Does that make sense, Tony: Michael, that’s very impressive. Now, do you just happen to know everybody? How do you find these amazing people disruptors, game changers, to interview them on your show? Michael: They find me, they find me through a network of IR- PR companies and vessel banking companies. Like I was saying, family offices. They find me and I’ve built a network earlier in the eight, eight years I had on iHeart. I kinda made a little reputation of journalistic integrity and they find me, they like me. And they come, they said, why do I want to, I’m going to be a part of your network. How can we work together? And then we’ve got a whole new chapter that’s coming up in the future, but we can save that for that question but they find me. Tony: I totally understand that all just about all of my guests come to me. I don’t have to look out though. When I first started, I reached out to some people, but once it got going, I am inundated with people that want to be on my show. So I understand how that works and it’s a great amount of talent and a great number of good people out there that really need to be showcased on our show. So that is very good. This is Michael Yorba, new media business, broadcast mogul. His website is W F N, the number one.com WFN1.com. So WFN is a network. Is it just gonna be one show? Are you going to have other shows? You could have a TV platform? Michael: I think that we’re going to be seeing a bridging of the gap between the great society or the greatest generation and the Zee society, the mint, the millennials, the Gen Xers. There’s going to have to be a communication thread where they all interact with each other and they’re all incentivized to work with each other instead of creating what’s happened now, such a hard break between the generations and they had no communication. I think that the interactivity that we see between young entrepreneurs and these 85-year-old people who are at the top of the network pyramid if you will, that string. When that finally gets connected, then we’re going to see a revolution in the media business and that’s going to happen through gamification and incentivisation of media, and I think that’s where we’re going to start seeing some real dynamic changes in the near future. Tony: That’s very interesting. With Esports being the largest viewed platform in the world, is this gamification part of that Esports umbrella? Welcome to the shows to learn a so great to have you on once again and I’m even more excited than ever because we have such a great topic. We’re going to talk about the future of work. Welcome to the Tony DUrso Show Soulaima: And thank you, Tony, for having me. Once again, this is my absolute favorite podcast and I’m so excited to be here with you and to share all my thoughts of future of work. Tony: Oh, thank you the honor is mine. I’m just whatever it is, Soulaima. Perhaps we know each other from another life. I’m just like solo electrified when I talked to you. It’s, it’s crazy. All right. But now I’m going to force myself to focus. We’re going to get back here because I really want to talk about this and share a lot of this information with my audience and you know, my audience has grown since the last time. So perhaps a little recap who you are, what you’ve done. Tell us a little about your backstory and how you got started in this. Soulaima: Oh I, you know, I am, yeah, where to start. I’m Danish, Morocco and I grew up in Denmark. So if I have a funny accent, that’s because I’m Danish and I used to work in big IT companies like HP, Microsoft. And in 2007 I became independent and I started my own consulting company and today I work in 35 countries. I work with the biggest clients, McKinsey and News Corp and all those companies that you all probably know. I’m a strategic advisor on how to motivate employees. And I’m the keynote speaker on life design and I written, co-written 16 books and I live in Palo Alto, California. And I am happily married a mom. I have two kids. And yeah, I have a really interesting life. And it came out of nowhere. No one gave me this life. Actually, Tony, you know this, but I was thrown out of school in seventh grade. I couldn’t get a job. I was the only Brown, Danish Moroccan woman really. And I was outcasted and no one really thought I had any talent. So, you know, I really had to do the struggle myself. I spent 25 years finding out my passion. I was trying hard to find my talent and I really struggled to create my own space, my own life. And that’s my motivation to talk about the future of work and life design because I don’t want anyone to sit and think that they don’t feel that they suit of fit in the society. I want people to think less about how to get a job. And I want to motivate people to realize that they can design their own future and that they hold their own destiny in their own hands. And, and that anything is possible. Really. It is. I think I’ve proven over the last many years I’ve proven to people that if I can do what I’m doing, then everyone else can do that too. I mean, you just need a recipe, right? You need a formula, you need a method, you need a community that can support you and all those things are something you have to know how to, start off actually. Tony: Totally agree and you know, Soulaima Gourani, I go to a lot of events, I speak at events and it seems to me that many people, we’ve heard this, hey, you create your own life. Hey, it’s all up to you. Hey, you can have whatever you want. We’ve heard this. You know, the audience is heard as you and I, you’ve lived it. We’ve made it happen. And I don’t usually ask for advice to the audience until later, sometimes in my shows. But some people, they’ve heard this, what is it, how do they get from where they are wherever they are to the next level. I really want to go into this and also bring what’s it mean to have a real job? I want to bring entrepreneurship helping women and so forth. Well, this is kind of takes us apart with that thread of these people, they’ve heard this and how do they get to the next level? Soulaima: So Tony, first of all, what is really important is to understand that thanks to technology, everything is now possible. So as an example, if you are an introverted kind of burned out, texted driver, right? And you live somewhere in the suburbs and there’s no real education available, you have a low income for the first time ever. Even if you’re not skilled, despite where you live, despite how little or almost invisible your talent might be, you now have the option equal options like anyone else in the world to go and create a global company from your living room. I mean, just to be honest, it’s possible. It might not be what you end up doing, but that is absolutely possible. You no longer need to be the smartest. You no longer need to live in a specific city; like I live in Palo Alto, Silicon Valley. It used to be where you had to live to make it. Today you can live on a remote island and still be very successful, but you really need to understand what is a good life for you. And that is the very first thing you need to think about when you discuss your life design. Life design means what is a good life? What is a sustainable life for you? And you have to be very honest. If you are introverted, maybe you have traumas, maybe you have things in your life that is not making it possible for you to have a full-time job serving customers, you know, in a, in a restaurant. If you cannot do that, then you should not have that as a job. You really need to find out what is the best possible job for you. But not only that, what does it mean for you to have a good life? So as Scandinavia, we think about the good life a lot. We are the happiest nation, number one or number two on the list. Always. Why? Because we think a lot about what brings happiness. For instance, a certain amount of income makes you happy. If you make more, it doesn’t make you happier actually it makes you more stressed. Exercise makes you happier than a pay rise of $25,000 a year. Like there’s a lot of things that you can put into your life just, and I really want people to think about what is a healthy, sustainable future proof life for you that mean? And that being set, you can not compare yourself to other people and you should really not try to live a life that is perfect for someone else, but it’s not the perfect life for you. So that’s the very first step to think about what is a good life for you and a good life for you might be, I’m not working on Mondays, right? And on Fridays, I’m out surfing, meaning I can only work Tuesday to Thursday and I can only work from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM and my only skill is I like tasting food. Tony: Hey, that’s my schedule. Today’s show is with Michael Yorba and Soulaima Gourani Broadcast Mogul and The Future of Work. And now back to the chat with Soulaima Gourani. Soulaima: Well, you know, I can tell you why I know. So, the last five years I’ve been researching what people are missing in their life. And you know what they’re missing? They’re missing time with family. They are missing the time to take care of their health. They have no meaning, meaning they don’t know what is, why do I get up in the mornings? Why am I working? And it kills you not to have a purpose in life kills you. Then they don’t feel that they have financial security in the job. They’re not being paid what they think they should be paid. And finally, they have no fun. So family, fun, financials, health, and purpose are those five things are missing Tony or you don’t have it in the perfect combination, then you will be unhappy in your life. So that’s why I think a lot of people would say, when I ask people, if you had everything in the world and if you could take a piece of paper and just tell me how you would live your life from Monday 5:00 AM to Sunday 10:00 PM fill out all the blanks, okay. Tony: I like that, in fact, some very successful people have done just that. I talk about someone called Jordan Adler who wrote beach money. I talk about him here and there. He did just that. He was so disgusted with his life. He just committed to paper, wrote out his vision, how he saw his, you know what? We spoke about this in our last interview. He wrote the whole thing and the most amazing thing. You know this, I know this for the audience. It manifested, it actually came and there’s a process to it and I have a book on it called the vision map where I describe the whole process really, really happens that I want the audience to know this. This is your chance if it’s not going the way you want. If you’re not doing what you want, listen to Soulaima she knows. Soulaima: Yeah, I did it and I am teaching people to do it and most people they feel like, well you know, so here’s the thing. You know what I found out? People don’t, they’re not unrealistic in their life design Tony. That’s the funny part. They actually very realistic and what they want to do throughout the week. It’s not greedy, they’re super serious. They want maybe they want to do yoga every morning from seven to 8:00 AM maybe they want to do something, you know, like going for a hike every afternoon, one to 2:00 PM. Those things are not unrealistic. We just want to be happier in our life. We just want to spend more time on being more creative. We want to be able to rest more. We want to be able to learn more, to study more, to have a better balance between giving out our job or time or attention and recharge. This is the reason why I’m so passionate about future health like because in the future, meaning next year in 2020 anything is possible, but you know what? People are missing, Tony, and that is why it is so important to have your show. That is people who need inspiration (in spirit), meaning I see someone else doing it. We know for so many years that if people get the inspiration, they will create the motivation to go out and start doing something in their life. But you know what? In most countries we go to work, we get off, we do some exercise, we spend time with our family. We sit in front of our TV and we go to bed and we tried to numb ourselves with unhealthy food, alcohol, cigarettes. This is not a dignified life, but it’s a life of so many people. I’ve been there. I had to be picked up by an ambulance and taken to the hospital before I knew I couldn’t continue that life. Tony: Wow Soulaima, I know that you have a number of successful groups in methods. Do you have a particular group where the person that really wants to make it for real come on, no baloney, really wants to take that next step up and actually do something better, live a better life? Do you have a, do you have a group to indoctrinate this person into some of the tools and techniques to actually do that? Soulaima: I have, so you know, I’ve spent the last three years building the biggest online community in Scandinavia. It’s in Scandinavian, so meaning you, you will not really be able to understand anything since it’s in Danish. But I built those communities for three years and now they are the biggest ones. And the reason why I moved to Palo Alto Silicon Valley last year was to start building those communities in the US so later this year I will launch womenreignite.com is an online community where we wait, I have my online curriculum and investors are investing and growing and we might actually enter both India and the US at the same time because this is a universal issue. It’s not an American, it’s not a German or Italian issue. This is a global thing because you know what, the way we work, it’s globally the same. We face the same issues and most people; regard I work in 35 countries. All the people, all the religions, all the people, men and women, everyone I meet, they want more or less the same things in life. They want safety, they want fulfillment, meaning, purpose, love, those things. And the way we work is not giving people those things. So an evolution is on its way because it’s possible thanks to technology. That’s why I love technology. That’s the only thing I love about technology is the freedom that it gives us. Freedom and flexibility. Tony: Oh, there’s no question about it. What we can do today is multiples. Many multiples of what we used to be able to do in the past. Things that back then years ago that were difficult or couldn’t be done today. It’s just a no brainer. It’s done in seconds. Technology has changed everything. So now are you saying that the person who is that waiter or waitress, taxi cab driver, the career mind, the person, the person working the nine to five, they can actually do something technologically, more easily from their home and actually can advance them into the future, into an entrepreneurship even if it’s a small thing? Soulaima: Yeah! Yeah! Both yes and no. Not everyone wants to work from home, Tony. Not everyone wants to sit in front of the camera and have the cam or not everyone is suitable for that kind of lifestyle. Remember, I’ve been poor most of my life. I come from a poor immigrant family in Denmark and you know, I’m not really well educated. I am today because I paid for my own education, but I wasn’t educated at all. I was thrown out of school in seventh grade. So I had to really build my own life. But the thing is today for as little as $20 you can acquire skills that are so needed just in a few years from now. Let me give you an example. I was with a dad, a few weeks ago. He’s a petition and he was very unhappy because his son is 21 but he’s a little mentally, maybe not so mature. So He’s more like a 15-16 years old kid and he didn’t do well in school and he didn’t want to do homework and he wasn’t motivated by anything. But you will get this point immediately. The only thing he was passionate about was building his own drones. And the dad showed me videos of those drones that kid could build. They were amazing. And then I put for him, I lined out the business of drones five years from now and I said, you better invest in your son because he is doing the right thing. Tony: How about that, that’s amazing. Soulaima: So you know, I think it’s time for everyone who feels underestimated underdogs. Outcast, not talented, not schools. This is our time you cannot take education and then think they do will have a stable career. No, the future belongs to the one who is able and willing to work hard and will invest in themselves as little as $20 a month or even less. They are so much content out there. It’s totally free, but you have to understand the trends and tendencies that I hitting your industry or the area that you are living in and a lot of those skills that we need in the future has nothing to do to go to universities. Soulaima: And so my next point is, I was advising a minister who had concerns about, uh, immigrant women who were not able to speak the language. I think this could be an American situation as well. And they were spending x amount of millions monthly on those women who could not get a job. First of all, they want to spend time with a family. They didn’t want to go out for work. It’s, it wasn’t against the traditions of, you know, the culture in nature. And this minister was very, you know, frustrated by how to activate those women. And I said, okay, you know, of course, I like women to start working as well but you know what? Maybe we should find out something they can do from home that does not require them. The language skills of this new country. I mean, let’s just be honest. You know, those women were about 47 years old and they were not motivated to start learning a new language. Anyway, long story short, I told this minister and this politician, let’s educate them. If they can do any kind of knitting, if they can knit a sweater or something, then they actually have all the qualifications they need. So, in order to start learning them how to code is they can code, we can start learning and teaching them how to hack. And this specific area of the country is gonna lack and, and be missing 40,000 people with coding skills. Just in the next five years. In the US we will be missing, already the next five years. 500,000 jobs can yet not be fulfilled because we don’t have people with the skills. And you know what’s interesting, those skills, you don’t need to go to university to get them, but you need to start teaching yourself those skills. Today’s show is with Michael Yorba and Soulaima Gourani Golani broadcast mogul in the future of work. Soulaima Gourani was born in Morocco and grew up in Denmark. She received an MBA from Copenhagen Business School in 2007 and received further education and executive training from a number of institutions including Yale University, Harvard University, Kennedy School of Government, Stanford University, UC Berkeley, INCHE Business School, and ISB India. She now teaches online and at leading business schools in the world in life design and now back to the chat with Soulaima. Soulaima those 500,000 jobs, can they be replaced by technology or they actually need operators with people? Soulaima: Well, artificial intelligence and robots will take over a lot of our tasks, but only the one who is very routine based, dangerous or boring, right? All, all the tasks that require, you know, a common sense, empathy, that or kind of not routine based, but more flexibility and critical thinking, those skills will not be in danger of extinction the next 15 years. A lot of new industries will happen. For instance, we know that, um, entertainment, let me give you an example. This is a bad example, but for instance my son, he liked watching other people play fortnight on Youtube. I’m like, why are you doing that? You know, and, but this is an industry just like you and I will sit in front of the TV and see basketball is the same entertainment. You will start seeing people coaching and the whole human aspect. Everything that can help people improve their mental hygiene, mental hygiene will not be unemployed the next 15, 20 years. Everything that has to do with human interaction. Like I would worry if I’m a doctor, some of your jobs positions will still be around, but the ones who will stay around much longer is actually the nurses. So if you’re a nurse, you can be completely safe. Happy. It will be, it will take many, many years before your job is out of here. But if you’re operating in the operation room more and more of those tasks, noninvasive operations, not too risky operations will already, they already being operated by my, by machines. So you can’t really say that it’s the blue collar workers who are in the most danger. It is as much a white collar people. So I think that’s probably the biggest surprise that the losers, I don’t like saying loses, but the ones who will be the most challenged people in the future are not low skilled worker. Absolutely not places. For instance cleaning, cleaning is highly difficult to automate because every home is different. So if you’re a cleaning lady, you have a personal cleaning people’s home, you will still be in business 10 years from now, no danger. Tony: I just thought of a funny joke. One thing that can be replaced by AI as is politicians. Soulaima: Yes, they actually make better decisions and better laws. Tony: They can follow the rules of their party and deal with it. Soulaima: No, it’s not even funny. I mean actually they predict that there’ll be managing the whole designing the laws, just like the lawyers, you know, a lot of the job of lawyers, so a routine based really and shouldn’t be handled by human beings and thanks to blockchain things will be much more transparent and easy to see if there’s been something illegally happening in the process. And so thanks to a lot of technologies, but you know, most people shouldn’t worry about blockchain or artificial intelligence because we extend people’s lives every year with three months. So we should start thinking about how to live a sustainable life so that we will not burn out and Americans do worry about health care costs, so you cannot postpone your health back to what is your optimal life design. If you don’t have the time to do something good for yourself, 20 to 30 minutes a day, let’s say, go for a hike, go out with a dog and treadmill, whatever. This is dangerous, you have to start thinking about how you will make time for a little bit more healthy eating, how to nurture your relationships with people you love and exercise. I mean, we cannot have a life where that’s not possible. No money, no money on earth is worth postponing your health for. It’s a very European type of a point of view because the Europeans, that’s my culture, your culture. We’re more in the relationship and living life and having a good life as opposed as perhaps some other cultures. So it seems to be more and more becoming more dominant as the culture or the go-to culture for people in the more capitalistic type environment. Because all that money and I say this to people, it’s like, why do you want a dollars? What are you going to do? You can’t eat that much money. You know my refrigerator is full, my cars got gas, my wife is happy, my dog’s happy. What more do you want? Do you know, feed other people. Make other people happy. Okay, I can see that. But it all comes down to I want to live and enjoy. My life. I’ve made the money and too many times. You and I, we’ve seen this to people. They make money. They’re miserable. I can’t tell you I’m saying this to the audience, it sounds like, oh yeah, if I had $1 million, I’d be happy. Believe me, you wouldn’t. Soulaima: No, no, no, no, no. Money does not make people happy relationship does. And back to your point, people are very lonely, Tony. So I mean, we can enjoy this podcast and I’m sure that all you listening to us feel that doing the same room with us. But when this podcast is over, we are again alone, right? So loneliness is a big issue and it’s killing more people than cigarettes. So I think, I’m not sure but it’s really, it’s a big killer. So we have to find out how to get back to the good life. I mean, a life with living and you know where it begins, you have to start believing and trusting life. And I’m not specifically religious, but I’ve, I’ve seen how my life changed. I used to be angry. I used to be pessimistic. How could I be something else? I mean, I had a very tough upbringing. I’m so traumatized. But in my mid-thirties, I started realizing when I’m positive when I’m grateful and thankful. When I, when I trust life. So I’m to say when I trust God, that is really when my creativity, my strength, everything comes to me that actually makes me even most successful. So you know, at part of what I’m doing and teaching and writing about is how to prepare your brain for success. Because you know what? Your brain is only here to make you survive. Your brain is not interested in making you successful. It’s only here to make you survive your own life. And honestly, I don’t want to survive my own life. I want to have a successful long life. So we have to understand and we know much more about the brain that we’ve ever done before, thanks to brain technology and brain scientists and all that. I have two brand scanners in my home. Tony: I think brain science has gone a bit too far, but that’s a whole different topic. I think it’s really what we just said earlier, having that good life, doing better, excelling. There’s, there’s a lot more we can say. In fact, we’re going to have to pick this up another time.
