Sara:
I am amazing. I'm so excited. Thank you so much for having me.
Tony:
The honor is all mine. I can't wait to talk about this because I've seen some of your stuff on stage. I've seen some of your material absolutely amazing on how you teach people to become financially fit. But before we go into the good stuff, I love to know how did it all start for you? What's your story?
Sara:
Well, I am originally from Puerto Rico and in Puerto Rico obviously. As well as in the United States obviously I learned this later on that there's no really that much education about money. You go to school, you learn math, you learn history science but when it comes to basic concepts of, there's nothing really available over there. And to be honest, it's still gone on me. How we still send our kids to school and they still don't have that financial education that needs in order for them to be financially fit or to charge open money later on in life. But, um, I actually came to this state, looking to get away from the poverty DNA. Yeah, I don't know if you have ever heard this concept of before Poverty DNA has been proven that it's kind of like a gene that we carry from generation to generation. And the only way to make out of it, you have to get out of your environment. You have to make changes, even your mental changes and also get educated and thanks to great mentors that I found here in the United States. They actually show me with a lot of patients about that and how I could break out of that poverty mindset and the poverty DNA.
Tony:
Very impressive. And I understand that on a very deep scale. Also, Sara, I grew up in that poverty mindset. I've lost count how many times I've heard in my family. We're poor, we can't afford it. We don't have the money. It's taken so much work over the years to get me out of that. It's insidious, it's so ingrained. It's like blue jeans being blue. You don't even think that anything else can exist. And I totally understand that and I'm very impressed. Okay, I get it that you help bring people out of that financial DNA issue and so this is why you created, you actually observed that this is a missing ingredient. Let's dig more into your financially fit network. Tell us more about it and why you created it.
Sara:
The financial network came after I created the financially fit women. And my heart and soul is obviously I want to help women, couples, entrepreneur to become financially fit by teaching them about money, especially women. They're in my heart probably first of all because of my own personal experience. Sometimes as men you guys already know that you need to bring the bread, you need to make money and just somethings that you kind like know from when you're growing up, when you watch your parents and your dad especially. However, things have changed a lot now women are taking a lot more forefront when it comes to finances. They becoming head of the household because of what's going on. Like the rate off a divorce, for example, is huge. And most of the time women are the ones that take care of the kids, right? So they, they become at least 40% of the household with under 18 they include women and the other primary household income. But that's one of the reasons. And then not only that but women live longer than men as well on average women can outlive and then by 15 years and that means that men die and women get disabled. So we are not really prepared financially for that. And not only that, apart from the poverty DNA and in our brain for generations and decades and century, we are the gatherers, we are the ones that take care of the kids. We are the ones that take care of making the food and all things. So that what we have learned, what is ingrained in our brain. But now we have shifted to a generation where we are taking the forefront in the workforce. We as the ones that are taking care of the kids and financing them, even the household. So things are changing, but our mindset is not changing. And that's what I want to breakthrough. I want to make sure that women learn to take charge of their money so they can live their lives on their own terms. I want to make sure that women understand the concept of wealth, in order for them to be able to retire and experience freedom. Sometimes they say I don't want to retire. Well, I understand that. But what about if you can have the choice of when you want to work and when you don't want to work. Instead of you just have the choice to be a worker at Walmart or be a janitor. Right? So that's what actually inspired me. And then from there, people that are on my email list, obviously the concept of wealth are the concept of wealth. And then I have some men in my email is that said Sara everything that you're talking about is only geared towards women. Why did you make it general? So that's when the Financially Fit Network came about.
Tony:
I see. That makes perfect sense. And I understand that your niche or niche, however people pronounce it, your focus is women. I totally get that. However, everything that you say and what you teach, it's about money. It applies to men as well as women. And I totally get that and I see how you can be successful. Now I am curious, though is your focus the entrepreneurial woman. Who, whether she's single or raising a family or on her own because in a normal scenario, and I perhaps that's kind of a weird word these days. In the normal scenario, the husband is out working, the woman takes care of the kids and takes care of the house. But that all changed these days. Do you also help that sort of a scenario too?
Sara:
Absolutely, I help women to start their own business, become an entrepreneur. That is something that I'm super passionate about. I think that even if you are a mom working at home with your kids, you can actually have your own business and start from there. I think that we can do it all if we want to. I think we're completely capable and I'm very far away from what an employee mindset is. So, I definitely want to teach women that they can actually, again, have their own business and make their own money.
Tony:
Yeah, I totally get it. Being financially fit is extremely important. With food we can eat, we can put gas in the car, we can take care of our loved ones. I totally get it. This is a society that is geared and all set up that way and we don't know what's coming up. These are uncertain times we live in. We don't know what could happen. Little tiny scares around the world and we see the videos, you know, the stores are empty. You know, the shells are rated and alluded and not in that way, but just everything's bought out. So we understand. We have to also think of the future.
Sara:
I always remember if a saying from Zig Ziglar that says, money doesn't necessarily make you happy but it is right there up with oxygen. I know that at least 99% of our problems can be solved with money. And the problem that we have with money it doesn't first of all, the perception that we have about money. Second of all, we don't understand the concept, the basic concepts of money, that allow us to grow the money in order for us to take care of myself, to take care of a loved one, and even to make a difference in the world. Those are the things that I want to spread out. That money is not bad. Money is just a tool that we use. It's an exchange of value, right? Is that perception that we have about money that makes the difference.
Tony:
I totally agree. But I wanted to mention to the audience as well that you boast that the way you teach, it's considered controversial, unorthodox, and revolutionary. So I'd like to know how is it that you teach something so radically different at its shocks people and yet it really works,
Sara:
Alright Well, the first thing is because there is a disconnect between our mind, our spirit, and our bank accounts. So, and that has everything to do with mindset. So in order for me to start changing your habits and behaviors about money. I have to teach you how to change your mindset regarding money, that's the first thing. The second thing that makes it revolutionary and controversial is that if I ask you, Tony, like these today at least 70% of the population, where do you think they put their money right now towards there retirement do you know?
Tony:
Personally, I don't know. I don't think there is much money there for people to put into retirement. That's the problem. We see more and more seniors I think, and I know I'm talking on a very general scale, but I seem to see more and more seniors are out there. I know so many should be retired and here he is doing other job nights and weekends and actually making some money on it because he has to, to survive. And I'm thinking times have changed it's different. And, when there is some money and again, generalizing, because there's of course that the level of the population that doesn't worry about it, they probably don't listen to podcasts like this, but the majority of the people, there's not enough money. There are fees and taxes and this and that. And this just a little bit of everything being taken away. So what's left isn't very much forcing people to work more.
Sara:
Okay, so I'll tell you this. The majority of people these days that are employees, they put their money on 401K. It's so sad when I speak to some of my clients that they think that 401K is free of charge that has no fees, that they don't have to pay taxes. So that only tells me that, again, they're not educated about where they're putting their money because 401K can have up to 17 different fees, let's start with that. 401K is not tax-free they are tax-deferred. So when you need it the most after you're 60 65 and you don't want to work anymore and you can, you want to start taking that money and use it to sustain yourself. That's when Uncle Sam comes and knocks on your door the IRS and says hey, I want my money.
Tony:

Tony:
All right, we're back on the Tony Durso show where you can learn from the wisdom and success of others to help you move on your vision path. Let's see what we can learn from today's guests. Today's show is about becoming Financially Fit and Wrestling Olympian with Sara Chevere and Ken Chertow. Sara's methods are not typical of a financial advisor. What she teaches and the way she explained are considered controversial, unorthodox, and revolutionary. All right, and now back to the chat with Sara.
Sara:
So I had a client, for example, that he had $800,000 in his 401K. By the time that we calculated how much he had, the same fee and how much he has to pay in taxes. He ended up with $525,000 and again, this is what the majority of people in the United States are putting their money. Why? Because that's all they know. 401K we're not meant for the majority of the workforce. 401K was created for that one for that person who was making millions of dollars. The executive at the company. But the government, find other ways to make money. So they made it available to everybody else. Go ahead sorry.
Tony:
No, that's all right. It's also a little bit of a curse as you're saying Sarah because I know someone with a 401Kand believe it or not, that person cannot touch that money until that person quits that job or no longer works there. However, this is the rub, the person is allowed to borrow off of that money and pay interest in fees and everything and it just eats away the money. It's just another part of the system. You think you've got that money, like that gentleman you just mentioned, $300,000 gone in fees, this and that. It's not, the amount of money we think we have isn't really there.
Sara:
Exactly and again, as you said, you invest money that we don't know. Like even if somebody that is an employee and they go to their employer that established 401K for the employees as an extra benefit, they can go to the employee and they can ask about, okay, how does my 401K work. They don't even know. We don't even know if the person that establishes that 401K in that company knows everything that is included in that 401K, all the rules, and regulations,
Tony:
Oh absolutely the employees direct it to the actual company that has the 401K money and talked to them about it.
Sara:
Exactly the employer, is using this in order for them to save taxes, right? It's a tax benefit for them that's their point of view to offer this, right? So there's nothing wrong with having a 401K. My suggestion is just to leave up to the company match. It's free money, right? Who' doesn't want free money? Now, what I tell you that there is a product in California that has no management fee that is tax-exempt and that you don't take the risk of losing your money. If the market crash. What will you say about a product like that?
Tony:
I love it hurry- up and tell us, please.
Sara:
Well, there is a product that is available. It is available for anybody that is in the United States right now, but it's what Tony Robbins calls in his book Money, Master the Game, the Rich Man Rock. Why? Because that one percent of the rich know about this program. They know about this option and they utilize it. They take advantage that it is called PPLI and they call it Zurich too in the book The Power of Zero I don't remember the name of the author right now, but basically, The power of zero is talking about how you can have investments without having to pay taxes. And again its not that we want to steal the government or anything like that, but we want to keep the majority of our hard-earned money and unfortunately people get upset sometimes when they hear politics saying, well, you know this person just when you make $200 million and he only pays 14% when I'm barely making $40 $50 $100,000 and I have to say 20, 30, 50 percent in taxes, right?
But it's not that they are cheating system is that they understand how it works and they know where to put their money. That's exactly what I do. I want to teach you not only how to change your mindset when it comes to money, but I want to teach you where to put it and educate you in a way that allows it to grow your money and that by the time that you needed the most that you don't want to work anymore, at least you want to choose where to work and where not to. You can actually utilize that money without having to lose it because that's when you need it the most.
Tony:
This is indeed revolutionary. Now, all of the audience members here with 401ks or about to go into a 401k and starting a new job, and of course there's a lot of members in my audience, they career-minded and no doubt they took advantage and are taking advantage of the 401k system of their company. What's your say, Sara, is that all these people have a better option to save more money and keep more of that 401k if they follow some advice you're going to give them or help you manage them? Where does this lead to, please?
Sara:
Yes, absolutely. I'm not gonna say that one thing is better than the other, but I want to say, Hey, there are other options too that you should explore and see if that option is convenient for you because that's the other part of my service, that's the other thing that I, that I do. I want to empower you to take charge of your money. I want to empower you to make own decisions. 62% of women, don't have a financial advisor and 70% of them, they fired their financial advisors within two years after the husband's death and 7% of women only trust their financial advisor. Well, why is this because this financial advisor, even though they can say that their fiduciary, all they wanted to do is say, Hey, trust me, just give me your money and I manage it for you. And we are living in different times.
People they want to know, they want to be educated about where are you putting your money, what are you doing with it? And they want to even have the choice to make the decisions regarding it. But there if financial advisors don't want to teach them because they know if they do, they going lose the business because that's probably what will happen. Then, that's what they losing, right? But that's not the way I work. I want to educate you. I want to show you the option and I want you to make a decision for yourself and for your family. That's what makes it a difference in what I do as a financial coach and as a financial advisor.
Tony:

I've said this before, my wife loves her Rothy and they are the best shoes she's ever worn. She wears them around the house. She says they massage her feet and we were out the other day at dinner and I looked down like, okay, let's see. She wearing her Rothy's and I look down and yep, she's wearing her Rothy's all the time. Forget these other shoes. She just keeps wearing her Rothy's. How do you make them so comfortable? I am impressed. These shoes are ultra-comfortable as soon as you slip them on and are you ready for this?
There's a zero break-in period in these shoes and that's unheard of and they're also in a wide range of colors and patterns and styles and it's going to blow your mind because these shoes are made from recycled plastic water bottles, go figure. Tony:
All right, we're back on the Tony DUrso show where you can learn from the wisdom and success of others to help you move on your vision path. Let's see what we can learn from today's guests. Today's show is about becoming Financially Fit and Wrestling Olympian with Sara Chevere and Ken Chertow and now back to the show with our guests. Sara, we have members that we've just discussed, they had their 401k there is, confusions and there's fear. They're not allowed to touch it. If they touch it, there are taxed. They can't take it out. They have to put it where the programs are that the company advises and there's no way they want to touch it because it grows and grows and it's a lot of money to them. Can people safely move their 401k from wherever their employer may designate as a suggestion or whatever? Can they safely move it to another place perhaps where you may suggest?
Sara:
Well, like you said, if they're working right now, if they have that job, they have to see what are the guidance on that specific program that they are in because not every 401K is the same and then if they are allowed to move it, most likely it has to go to taxable investment too no matter what, which will be like an IRA for example. There's no cost to move it to something like that, to move it from a taxable investment to a nontaxable investment, which is something that I can show my clients that legally I cannot suggest something like that. Let's say that way, right? But they can lower what they are contributing to their401K and then the difference they can actually put it in a nontaxable investment that will grow us well at no risk that will compound. And that's another thing you're like all of these investments, the beauty of it is that is compounded interest. Well, the downsize of investments like 401k is that they're subject to market conditions and if the market crashed or go negative as it happened in 2008 t when it was negative 38% they can lose a big chunk of their money. So, these are a risky investment and right now we are living in a variable market, we don't know what will happen in a year or two. Then the market is critical and we all know that there's a time of expansion and then there's a time of contraction. And right now we're living in a time of expansion but we know that the time of contraction is going to come again because that's market is a cycle, it works in a cycle.
Tony:
All right Sara, for those that have a 401k, what's the next step for that person to learn more about what their options are that they may not know about that will actually bring them more money? What would be the next step, please?
Sara:
So one of the things that I do is that I offer a complimentary financial freedom analysis. And then after we do the data assessment, then I come to live with some options and then they choose what they will feel that it will be better for them.
Tony:
Alright, and can a person find out more about this signup, register whatever at the website, thefinanciallyfitwomen.com
Sara:
That is correct.
Tony:
And by the way, for the audience women is W O M E N so, thefinanciallyfitwomen.com. Women for the plural and one last one, Sara for the entrepreneur, small business owner and so forth. They don't have a 401k. They're thinking this may or may not apply to them except for friends or family that they know that they have 401k. What do you have for all the rest of us?
Sara:
Again, it's the same thing, like everything applies to everybody when it comes to their financial freedom analyze. I think that everybody deserves to know what is their financial freedom number. The financial number is the number that you need based on your lifestyle or the lifestyle that you want to have when you are older. How much do you will need in order to survive or in order to live? And like for example, you and I, Tony were in California and you know that California is probably one of the most pricer states to live in. So, unless they want to move Kentucky or something like that, they should actually consider preparing right now and knowing their options and don't think your good young people that are in their twenties I don't think that this doesn't apply to you. Because actually the younger you are, the better and the most benefit you will be able to take care of. Now the people that are in their sixties and seventies don't think that this doesn't apply to you either because what is better, being 70 and broke, being 80 and broke or being 70 and 80 and at least have some money. Some money that is actually growing for you to help you out. So this applies to pretty much everybody.
Tony:
These are great points. Once again, this is Sara Chevere talking about becoming financially fit. You can find out more about her at thefinanciallyfitwoman.com Sara, thank you for explaining some of this helping and thank you for offering the free consultation so that we could have more information about what we can do that's wiser with the money that we have and the money that we're making.
Sara:
Absolutely. It is my pleasure. Again, like if there's something that I want is that people are in the know. You know like we all deserve that we all deserve to be in the know on what is available out there. We all deserve to take charge of our own money and live our lives in our terms. And it doesn't matter who's in the office, right? Who is the governor or the president or the mayor? It doesn't matter. Our lives are not decided by them. Our life is decided by what we do in our household.
Tony:
I love it. Once again, thank you so much Sara, and when there's something important financially, please come back and give us an update.
Sara:
Hey, absolutely my pleasure. _____________________________________________________________________________________ Ken Chertow
Tony:
And now we have Ken Chertow join us. Ken was US Olympian, two times junior champion while at Penn state. Ken was a three times and see a all American and three times academic. All American. Here we go. Welcome to the show, Ken. Great to have you back on again for another exciting interview.
Ken:
Yes sir glad to be here.
Tony:
The honor is mine and right off the bat I like to let the audience know go kenchertow. com I'm going to spell it. K. E. N, of course, Certo is C H E R T O W.com and the reason I'm asking you to go check this out is you got to see this video. You've got to see it yourself. Ken's highlights of his wrestling. He moves so fast. I have not seen anything. Anyone moves so fast on the wrestling floor, boxing floor or MMA floor or anything. It is absolutely amazing. Just saying it doesn't do any justice. Go to kenchertow.com and check that out. It's going to blow your mind. And Ken, you are a badass.
Ken:
I am flattered and honored Tony. You know how it is the older we get, the tougher we were.
Tony:
Yeah, I gotcha. You and also for the audience maybe you know, also introduced, I know I stepped a little bit out of protocol. Let's kind of take things from the beginning. Let's introduce you to the audience as well. While they're looking at this really great video, tell us how did it all start for you and what's your back story?
Ken:
Oh gosh, that's a long time ago. My, my mom got me out to wresting. I was kind of slicing energetic and I'm sure short I was under five feet. I am over now, but as a kid, it was just a good sport for me. I played a lot of different sports, soccer, football, baseball, tennis, a little bit, everything. I was average above average, pretty good, kind of aggressive but the combat sport wrestling made sense. So she took me to the YMCA we did some wrestling or I did okay. I wasn't that quick and nimble of that time. But yeah, I took a liking to it and I like a workout. I like the exercise. I like this fitness component. And basically, when I hit middle school, I started wrestling year-round and lifting weights year-round and made a total commitment to fitness and nutrition.
And it worked out and 10 years later I make it to the Olympic. Long story short fell in love with wrestling. I like the art of it I like workouts, just grind through the sport. I worked out in the end, I got to wrest in college at Penn State. We were one of the powerhouses in the country in wresting or my alma has won eight of the last nine MCA championships. We actually hosting Olympic trials here in State College Pennsylvania were I live next year, 2020 Olympic trials will be at Penn State University. So I will be involved with the promotion and I am excited about that.and some of my kids that I train or potential Olympians. That's kind of where we are now. It's no longer about me. It's about helping others, coaching kids, coachings college athletes and Olympians and try to help them fulfill their goals.
Tony:
Ken, thank you for that. And I got to say as well as let the audience know you're a little bit humble. And again, check out kenchertow.com check out his bio. Everyone. This is so long to read. It'll take me 20 minutes to just read all of your accomplishments and your medals and your awards. Absolutely amazing, I'm not even joking and you know, check it out audience and you'll see it's the real deal. He's done so much so well. And I can go to a couple of different directions. Great on your accomplishments, amazing on the Olympic trials, couldn't be held out there. Let's kind of take things apart a little bit. In no particular order, you now coach and you have students, you have a gold medal training camp. I like to know what do you do that perhaps could be different as opposed to any other training camp and how to do your students Excel and perhaps any successes they've had. That's a big question. I know we'll take it in pieces.
Ken:
Sure that a lot of questions and a lot of questions in actually one. I will try to make it easy on the crowd I strive to make wrestling fun? You have to enjoy what you're doing. If you're gonna make a commitment to something. You can't even just like it. You got to fall in love, you've got to have passion for the sport. So I tried to instill a passion, my athletes, whether they're eight years old or 18 I want them to enjoy the training, enjoy the learning and really have a positive experience. I'm a very positive coach. I certainly know the art of it. I have studied our sport pretty meticulously since I was a teenager and I am engrossed in wrestling and I am an expert in this sport so I tried to pass that along to my athlete. Definitely, we hit the nutrition and strength component, really hard. Just certainly half the wrestling, but the other half is about being strong and having national endurance total focus and concentration.
I mean one little laps next thing you know you're getting tossed. So we really hit hard on the nutrition aspect of it is critical. Training your body to just get ripped down the right fighting weight. I just take a real holistic approach to make sure I get the most out of my athletes. Specifically, to the camp I mean I run my wrestling camp at the Penn State Ramada Conference Center. And so most colleges, they host camps. They put them on campus. They have some counselors doing their thing, kind of an afterthought. Some of the truth for all sports. They just throw camps together and host them at colleges. I do professional camp operations out. I bring a different coach to help me. I organize, we break into groups by size deal and the Penn State Ramada is a really nice facility. I've been here for over 20 years and that's where I run a gold medal training camp system. We kids ages six to 18 we get beginners intermediate, we get a lot of studs.
I mean it's a whole Hodgepodge, kids, people and they fly in from all over the country and It pretty nice set up near to the airports like eight miles from Penn State College. So it works out very well. It's simple to get into here and I build traditional wrestling here. But I tried to get a lot of my guys in college certainly not all my athletes can go to Penn State for college but we're placing kids in, a lot of these were Ivy League schools in the Northeast. We get different kids who go out West. I cover Stanford Wrestling for the PAC 12 networks. We try to send different people to different places. And they do a lot of small college wrestling too beyond the major division one schools. So I try to help, one of the goals is to help our students, not just athletics but also education and use wrestling as a vehicle to help them prepare for college and life and ideally scholarship along the way. So those are some of the goals through my camp system.
Tony:

Tony:
All right, we're back on the Tony DUrso show where you can learn from the wisdom and success of others to help you move on your vision path. Let's see what we can learn from today's guests. Today's show is about becoming Financially Fit and Wrestling Olympian with Sara Chevere and Ken Chertow. While studying and training at Penn State. Ken was a three times NCAA all American World Espoir Champion, Pan American Champion and US Olympian Ken also excelled in the classroom as he became a three times Academic All-American graduating from Penn state with a 3.6 GPA. And now back to the chat with Ken. What kind of successes have your students had from your gold medal training, Ken?
Ken:
Well, I can give you a long laundry list. I think the most recent is prominent is a young man named Zain Rutherford. Zian grew up about an hour from here and he would not only come to the summer camp, but he would also commute, his parents would bring him to my local club, which I have. I have a whole training center on my property. I have a wrestling gym, he would come for a decade. He went on to Penn State he was dominating wrestler the past couple years in college wrestlers. Three times undefeated and state champion and he is one of the front runners to make the Olympic team for 2020. He has been a junior world champion in the 20 and under age group. Now, Zian is a really good example of somebody who made a commitment not only to my camp but also to my year-round club. He just did great work and he is a famous name in the wrestling circles. Now you never know who's gonna be on top. He was actually defeated last week by another phenomenal sophomore from Cornell University, Yianni Diakomihalis.
He's an amazing competitor too and he and the others will be fighting along to make you with the Olympic team. I can list go on and on different champions. Another one of my next favorite local is Quentin Wright, who also went to Penn State. He grew up from like a 130-pound freshman to 197-pound NCCA Champion. When somebody is discipline and kept eating and wrestling and training better your self, he just clean living hard-working guy and went on to Penn State, to be a four-time all American and two-time NCCA Champions. Those are a couple of local success stories. Just recently come through and they stayed in town and went to Penn State and did great work. There is another younger guy coming through his name, Hayden Hidlay he is at N C State now he just 20 years old. But as always with me as a freshman and again this year as a Sophmore. He's one of the top-notch wrestling 20 and under age group in the world championship level right now for his age group and he's trying to make senior level. So lots of guys who and lots of little kids too. Most of the kids come to my camp, including these guys who are now men started when they were seven, eight, nine years old coming to my camp. So those three boys I mentioned are not just casual campers. They're guys that literally for a decade every year and there also who stay with me throughout the school year. So, I'm really proud of those.
Tony:
Phenomenal, amazing hats off to you on that Ken. And I couldn't see that determination that they're focused, they're in it or not just casual. They added to the results you've attained. I'm so impressed
Ken:
Yeah is it just training some, but those three in there are all different size shapes. Wrestlers come in all different. built long, lanky, short, stocky, but some of the common attributes they have that turned over to everything we do. Like a lot of people listening to your show are probably entrepreneurs and business people. Maybe just do different sports growing up but some of the common threads with those three are consistent commitment over time. They just have a passion for what they do really relentless. So those three boys I mentioned Zain Rutherford Yianni Diakomihalis and Hayden Hidlay. They're not like world-class athletes like when they were eight I wasn't like wow they are going to be professional. Even when they were 12 they just kept plugging away at it. Literally, a decade-plus commitment to perfect the art of wrestling. Prefect their individual styles. They are just classy kids they are hard workers, but so many lessons of sports where there's wrestling or any other sport your listeners might do. Sports are training for the rest of your life and we apply all these lessons and commitment and discipline and perseverance in all the sports that we do as teenagers can to our lives, to our careers, to our businesses. I just think it's such a good way to train people for the future.
Tony:
Ken you mention just earlier you did some work for PAC 12 tell us a little bit more about that.
Ken:
Oh, that's fun stuff. Well, I've been doing TV broadcasting and wrestling as an analyst for over 20 years. When this company called CS TV College Sports Television was started over 20 years ago. One of my college teammates, Chris Bevilacqua now that somebody you might want to talk to. He's a legend in the sports marketing world. The TV enterprises and he literally started CSTV a sold it to CBS for $30 million. CBS, CBS College Sports Network and that was his network. And I worked with CBS for a couple of years before the Big 10 Network was created. Chris Bevilacqua was involved in the Creation of VPN the big 10 Network, so I jumped to the Big 10 this date back about 12 years ago. I worked Big 10 Network and had a lot of fun as an analyze there and then the PAC12 network was created, you can relate to that being a California guy, I mean the PAC 12 Networks about eight or nine years old now based in San Francisco and I was like, well, do I keep covering Minnesota and Iowa?
All these cold States do I get on a plane and go to Stanford and Arizona State. It wasn't a very difficult decision. The PAC 12 was really good to me and they offered a nice opportunity. I've been working for the textbook networks very beginning. It's a lot of fun. Arizona State, Stanford or Oregon state or three of the prominent teams in division One Wrestling and they keep getting better. Right now, Arizona State got some really great individuals. They were in the top 10 of the NCAA tournament, but Stanford actually beat them to win the PAC 12 conference. They didn't get a lot of parody up and down and it's really impressive when a high-level academic school like Stanford can excel in wrestling too .so they obviously recruited the top scholar-athletes nationwide and kudos to them, but Oregon State's got a great program.
Three different environments, those are the three main places I fly, to cover PAC 12 wrestling, three powerhouses of the PAC 12. It's just a lot of fun doing that. I know wrestlers so I can sit on the analyst, right? There is a play by play guy who is typically a TV guy. He goes to year-round and there are a couple of different ones I work with, but I get to talk about the wrestling breakdown, what's happening, explain to people what's going on. It's a lot of fun and I watch Bill Walton and he's full of energy, right? So I'm kind of coming up a bit. I do appreciate his energy and intelligence and excitement he brings in the sport. I try to make wrestling entertaining for the viewer. I want to be able to help somebody who's never seen wrestling or rarely seen wrestling, which may be one of your listeners right now. They actually enjoy watching wrestling on the PAC 12 Networks. So it's really been an honor to work with them. For them.
Interestingly to know another analyst join. He covers some of the different events too. Anthony Robles person. You should talk to Tony. We definitely introduce you to Anthony Robles. Anthony is an NCAA champion from Arizona State. You might recall he won the NCAA championships he has one leg. What an incredible success story? I mean this is crazy stuff. He's got one leg and he won the NCAA Championship. He is an Espy Courage and overcoming obstacles. An incredible success story, he's also an analyst with PAC 12 Network. He started about four or five years ago. A bit younger, but it's great to have him on board and we work together every year at the finals. So we do different championship separately, but when we had the PAC 12 Finales Anthony Robles and I get together and do the PAC 12 Finals along with the I play by play guy. The play by play guy this year is actually a famous guy. Daron Sutton is the son of Don Sutton. A famous baseball pitcher one over 300 games for the Dodgers the Cubs and many other teams. His son is the play by play guy at the PAC 12 Network. That's kind of fun. We worked together with him at the finals this year at Arizona State.
Tony:
Ken your passion comes through so loud and clear. It's amazing. You're so much fun to watch when you do your analyzing of the games in the competition and so forth. And I like to know your Alma mater, Penn State, and you mentioned this, they want six of the last seven NCAA championships. What was your involvement in that?
Ken:
Well sending, couple of those guys we talked about earlier. Developments, I'm not integrally involved. They have a full-time staff. I used to coach at Penn State in the 90s and I chose to leave college coaching and just work with kids full time. So my job is to help guys that, can get college scholarships and I've sent a lot of wrestlers at Penn state over the years. But certainly not every wrestler is gonna make it to Penn State. That's the cream of the crop. And you have to have a certain genetic ability, a certain skill, just that total commitment, like Zaine Reford and like Quentin. Wright. Those are two super examples of became superstars at Penn state where there are other guys, just Brian's Perry up there right now doing well he is from the state of Pennsylvania law school.
Luke Dye Nursing assistant came through my program that graduated a couple of years ago. So I mean I have different guys who go there and some are stars, some are, some are not stars. They're all contributors and get after it. Penn state loaded though when you get like a Duke basketball, Yukon basketball. Anyways, you know, they get the cream of the crop recruiters, Penn State recruits nationwide and some of my campers from other parts of the country. Get to go there too. They're getting the best athletes. I'm part of building the tradition at Penn State. The competitors there, we were good when I got here, but my group of friends helped Penn state elevate the game. We were National Duals Champions. Weiser's asked me, we had a great performance as a coach there. We won the National Duals or we were second in the NC Tournament.
This proves that both the athlete and the coach. I had a big impact on Penn state wrestling but the current era of coaches, a different group of guys and they're doing a wonderful job and built a powerhouse. So we just got rich cultural wrestling in the state of Pennsylvania. 600 high school wrestling Pennsylvanian. Just a tradition here. The high school coaches are serious about, a lot of kids start young. So it's just a pretty exciting environment to have that kind of dominance. It's gone now I mean seven out of eight the last nine .it is unprecedented it is kinda like UCLA basketball or Yukon women's basketball, just kind of Alabama football is that type of dominance. That's the type of separation. My own alma mater got for the crowd now, fun times for wrestling in this area.
Tony:
Can't think of how exciting that's gotta be and how proud you are being from that area as well and submitting and helping in many capacities in there.
Ken:
My gym is right down the road here. So I bought four acres of property, seven miles from Penn state university. and this was 20 years ago now. So I live out here just off campus way and I have my house in a restaurant. Pretty cool. And then I can go off and watch Dual Meet. So you know I mentioned earlier work for PAC 12 but actually, do cover some big 10 network match still. One of the coolest matches fun experiences. Now let's get back to your question, but we filled a 16,000 seat arena, Bryce Jordan center for when Michigan came to town. The Michigan and Penn State game and it was live on the big 10 Network. We sold out the arena and I was the analyst here. Really cool fun time. So usually we use this arena, it's called Rec Hall.
These tickets are sold out at like 7,000 tickets but for a couple of matches a year and we go to the big arena and sell that out too. And it was on national TV and that was pretty fun. So I'm always working to not just coach score but also promote it and grow, get other folks involved. So like there might be some folks listening to this podcast that have businesses or on you have children, grandchildren and Hey you want to get them involved in sports, sports training for life. But definitely, every young boy or girl should try wrestling. Just a great art, self-defense, great fitness, great exercise. And on that note girls, wrestling is booming like crazy. I mean it's just exploding. I've got a girl's camp, we get a great ton of girls. Just exciting times for our sport is as women are getting more opportunities in our sport of wrestling.
Tony:
Thank you Ken and I like to remind the audience, there's an earlier interview with Ken and me from a couple of years ago. Check that out. There's a lot more information in there about wrestling and wrestling and boxers and all sorts of great stuff. So you guys got to check that out. It's a great, great interview. And Ken, before we go I wanted to touch upon one thing cause I know how important it is and I think it's not viewed as important as it should be. That's proper nutrition, proper care. It is separate from the technique and the working and being on the mat, but it's getting that physical body infrastructure in place and strong and I believe you have something that really helps. let's talk about that.
Ken:
Yeah, well definitely nutrition is a core component of anybody's lifestyle. If you want to be feeling good and perform well, whether it's an office or whether it's playing or whether it's a sport, you want to have good, healthy nutrition and I also use supplements. I'm a nutrition and wellness coach at kenchertownutrition.com and people go there and get different products. We have products for athletes. We also really cater to people's wellness. I help a lot of parents, coaches, friends with your wellness. I personally, you've seen, Tony, I personally kept off over 20 pounds over the last seven years. I've recently recommitted and really banged down, got the lowest I ever been. So took off a total of 25 pounds and I feel great. I used to probably I daily. I'm a product of the product. I really coach people through their weight loss and wellness program. I will always embrace nutrition.
I mean heck, I competed before supplements were a thing, but now supplements are commonplace and widely accepted. They can help raise your metabolism, grow your appetite, help you lose weight, feel better, and use them consistently and I recommend them and I coach people through. So anybody from any walk of life to contact me, I'm glad to coach you and help you give you tips and you get on my website you learn about it certainly I have a 10% of my people base within an hour here that I held, but I'm out in rural Pennsylvania. This is a combination of great supplements and e-commerce. I am distributing it, crushing, not just because I get the word out, but because I help people. I help coach them. I teach them. I teach product information, but it is also about making a healthy lifestyle and eating small healthy portions, drinking plenty, of water or be discipline and commitment. All the basic things you learn through life and I help coach people to do these, but then also the products.
Products are incredible in the sense they raise your metabolism and lower your appetite, Holy smoke and they give me extra energy through the roof. So that's the benefit. I mean I'm your coach, I coach you for free. There's no fee for my coaching when you're one of my product users. I'm here to help my folks. So I enjoy that just as much as I enjoyed coaching, wrestling, I was lean and mean as a competitor and I stayed healthy as a 53-year-old man and that's why I'm 53 years old and going strong. I still scrap the camp with anybody. I take on all comers so I'm still healthy and I'm proud of those. I need them all. I can't. I also, there's joint supplement products really helpful too, so definitely has a product for you. We actually have five product lines, so pretty user-friendly. We have somebody for everybody just a matter of getting on the phone or email with me so I can whip them into shape her.
Tony:
