Dr. Diane Hamilton - Cracking the Curiosity Code
Dr. Diane Hamilton, a nationally syndicated radio host, award-winning speaker, author, and educator, is a thought leader in the fields of leadership, sales, marketing, management, engagement, personality, curiosity, and motivation.
She is the creator of the Curiosity Code Index® and Perception Power Index, as well as the author of five books sold worldwide: Cracking the Curiosity Code, The Power of Perception, The Online Student’s User Manual, How to Reinvent Your Career, and It’s Not You, It’s Your Personality.
Her book regarding personalities was required reading at an Arizona-based university, where she was also nominated for an honorary doctorate in addition to her traditionally-obtained Ph.D. in Business Management.
Show Notes
Her curiosity is the spark to it all. Diane has always been a curious person. She wanted to explore and learn how to do new things.
Her background is in sales originally. She sold everything from system computers in the 80s to being a pharmaceutical rep for 20 years. You learn the best lessons ever when you’re in sales.
Sales toughens you up. She went into real estate lending in different areas which led to teaching.
She teaches online courses for multiple universities and worked as the MBA chair at Forbes School of Business and different positions at other universities.
She says, “One good thing about getting older is you know so much because you’ve done so much”. Diane never thought she would write about curiosity at all. She fell into it because of her radio show.
She’s interviewed around 1500 people now, and a number of billionaires from all over the map. As Diane started to interview people, she realized that they all were super curious.
She looked at how different they were from her students. Some of her students were not as curious as the guests on her show. She found that her students sometimes wanted you to give them the fish instead of teaching them how to fish. That’s what led to her interest in curiosity.
She thought about writing a book about curiosity because it was so interesting to her. What she found after writing the book is that there’s a lot of research out there about curiosity. There’s even assessments to see if you have a higher or lower level of curiosity. It helps you to know if you want to hire somebody if they have a higher or lower level of curiosity.
If you have a low level, then what do you do about it? How does it tie into anything? It ties into EVERYTHING. From all the experts she’s had on her shows, no matter who she asks what comes first, is it curiosity or emotional intelligence? Curiosity or creativity? Curiosity or innovation?
They all agree that curiosity is the spark that ignites all the things that companies need to work on. It’s the spark that makes people interested and passionate about what they do…
